Specialties and Services:

Wilson Reading Program.

  • For students diagnosed with dyslexia in any one of the three subtypes (see above), the Wilson Reading Program is an excellent and proven intervention. Wilson is one of several International Dyslexia Association’s approved Orton Gillingham programs. Orton Gillingham is a “style” of teaching that is the only proven intervention for dyslexia.

  • Many struggling Readers also benefit from the Wilson program. It has been shown to be effective with students who are struggling to read and write and who have a number of the above characteristics. I would conduct a pre-test, speak to the child’s teacher and reading specialist, and look at his/her test results before making that decision.

Reading Intervention for older and younger students

  • Not every student needs the intensity of Wilson. Wilson has a faster paced program called Just Words which could be used with older students who have some spelling issues but aren’t significantly behind their peers.

  • Many young children struggle when learning to read, but they are not at the level of a language disability, and they are NOT in need of an Orton Gillingham intervention. However, they often do benefit by using the materials as a support. Many 1st or 2nd graders need what I call a “phonetic tune up” and they take off. Others need some fluency practice or some skills and strategy work in areas such as comprehension. I provide tutoring services for those children as well, and I have found they catch up quickly in reading with a twice a week intervention.

Writing Intervention/ Struggling Writers

  • If your child struggles with writing in general, and not because they have a learning disability but because it is a complex skill to master, I will assist your child in all the steps of the writing process. I can simply take the student where they are and build on those skills, or I can use a program called The Writing Revolution that utilizes the Hochman Method.

  • Dysgraphia is a writing disorder that prevents students from remembering learned spelling patterns, letter formation, legibility, etc. Dysgraphia often needs a professional diagnosis to get in-school help and to root out a dyslexia diagnosis.. Regardless, the Wilson Program is extremely helpful for improving writing issues.

    • To NOT be charged for a missed session, LET ME KNOW by email or text when there was an event you just learned about. LET ME KNOW if there is an upcoming field trip, etc that may interfere with our sessions. LET ME KNOW when you are away on vacation.

    • If I failed to check in with the teacher or you on a busy week (such as a holiday week or testing week, etc), I do not charge if showed up for sessions.
